Audubon Park

Audubon Park New Orleans is one of the many attractions that one can sight during New Orleans travel, operated by the Audubon Institute in New Orleans. Located at a distance of 6 miles form the city centre, the park is surrounded by Mississippi River on one side and by St. Charles Avenue on another. The park gets its name from John James Audubon, the famous poet that lived in the city in the 19th century. The land of the park was purchased in 1871, before which the area was used for plantation and later on as the staging area by the armies. Before the development of the park, the place was used for World Cotton Centennial Fair in 1884.

Audubon Park is famous for its highlights that include sports fields and picnic facilities. The Audubon golf course is another attractive feature of this park. It was in the early years of the 20th century that some part of the park was utilized to construct the Audubon Zoo, another attraction operated by the institute. Oak trees are the main attractions for the tourists, as many of them are hundreds of years old. However, some of these trees were uprooted by the Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Oschner Island is the area of the park that is home to a number of bird species like Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Ibis, Blue Herons, night herons and so on. One can also find a number of migratory birds such as Black-bellied Whistling Dicks in this part of the park. The local people use the park for variety of activities like jogging, cycling and picnicking.
