The convention centre complex is named after Ernest N.Morial, the first African American Mayor of New Orleans and it was later rechristened as New Orleans Convention Centre in the year 2008, to accentuate its location in the city. After Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005, the convention centre and Louisiana Superdome sheltered thousands of survivors and served as makeshift medical clinics for them. In 2006 the centre was renovated and was open for public viewing.
