
Take a Trip to Carrollton New Orleans - A Truly Beautiful Neighbourhood in New Orleans
Carrollton is a part of New Orleans located at the far end of uptown. If there is anything you cannot afford to miss during your visit to New Orleans it is a streetcar ride. Carrollton is near Tunale and Loyola Universities where you find many students and professors residing and patronize local businesses. In fact this is a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood with several small businesses and restaurants.
Streetcars would take you through the Riverbend where you would find clusters of restaurants, shops and businesses. Another two parts of Carrollton which visitors should get familiarised with are Maple Street and Oak Street. Both these are business streets located on the opposite sides of Carrollton Avenue.
The town of Carrollton was incorporated on March 10, 1845 and soon grew into a city. The Carrollton Historic District is architecturally significant within the context of southern United States because of its sheer size and unusually fine collection of shotguns. In fact Carrollton contains nearly 2, 442 structures in the shotgun house tradition.
Some of the principal landmarks of Carrollton are:
- Old Jefferson Parish Courthouse. This is a Greek revival building featuring colossal pedimented portico with four fluted ionic columns designed by one of the most renowned New Orleans architect Henry Howard.
- Rev. John Bliss Warren House - this is a columnar galleried house with slightly projecting portico that has a look of grand plantation house.
- Nathaniel Wilkinson House - This is a two story Downingesque Gothic villa with X shaped center. In fact there are hardly three or four Downingesque Gothic structures in entire city of New Orleans.
- D'Antoni House - This is a massive buff brick villa elaborately articulated in the Prairie style containing a matching garage.
In addition to the above stated, there are several other landmarks in this district.
