A neighborhood district of New Orleans, Garden District, is a quiet and calm landscape. The district allows you to leave behind the din and bustle of the city of New Orleans.
The district was developed in the period between 1832 and 1900. It boasts of a grand collection of historical structures and marvels. The mansions were built by the elite people of New Orleans who had earned great fortune in that era. These mansions secluded the people from the rest of New Orleans and gave them peace of mind.
Usually, the structures were huge because showing off possessed wealth was a tradition of the people of that period.
Once upon a time, the district was full of plantations. Later these plantations were sold off to wealthy Americans who did not wish to stay in the main city of New Orleans along with the French. Only in the year, 1852 New Orleans was annexed with the Garden District. In earlier phase of development of the district, only small houses in block were built and several gardens were created. Thus, the district got its name.
The primary landmarks of the place include the George Washington Cable House, also renowned as a national historic landmark and Commoner's Palace, a famous city restaurant.
The best part of visiting Garden District is the stroll that anybody can take to absorb the true classy beauty of the district of gardens. The walk provides a different feel as if we are traveling across some living museum.
