
Take A Visit to New Orleans African American Museum - A Glance at the African American Culture
Situated in the Historic Treme district, the African American Museum in New Orleans or the NOAMM is one of the most curious tourist destinations in the city. The district in which it is situated is the oldest surviving African community in USA. This museum traces the contribution of the African people right from the period of Slavery through the contemporary times towards the making of the city of New Orleans. This was constructed during the span of 1 year beginning from 1828 and completing on 1829. The objective of this museum is to promote preserve and create awareness regarding the contribution of African Americans among the people of USA.
The museum exhibits talk about the contribution of various African communities especially about the Treme community. The NOAMM is located on a former plantation site and constitutes of 7 structures. The chief structure is that of the Meilleur-Goldthwaite House - the best remaining specimen of Creole architecture. This building retains a major portion of the original architecture. The rest of the area has several salve cottages with temporary and permanent exhibits.
One of the highlights in the museum is the Louisiana Congo - the Bertrand Donation. This is a compilation of African textiles, musical instruments, masks, costumes and beadwork. This has been imported from Congo in Africa and emphasizes the similarities of the folk culture in both the cities in different continents. NOAMM also took part in Prospect New Orleans which is an international contemporary art event in USA. Photo exhibitions are also held in the museum, which is a part of African American Heritage Trail of Louisiana.
