Previously known as Union Race Course and Creole Race Course, Fairgrounds witnessed its first race card in the year 1872, conducted by Louisiana Jockey Club. The grandstand was destroyed by fire two times but was soon restored to the normal position. It was once again destructed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and remained closed for a year. You can consider this race course as part of New Orleans travels.

A one mile dirt track and a seven furlong turf oval are the main highlights of this race course. Slot-machine gaming facility is also offered in a separate building at this racecourse. Apart from this, Fairgrounds also serve as the venue for New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which is an annual event.

The important stakes that run at Fairgrounds include the names such as Louisiana Derby, New Orleans Handicap, Fair Grounds Oaks, Lecomte Stakes, Risen Star Stakes, Sugar Bowl Stakes and Black Gold Stakes. Pan Zareta and Black Gold are the two award-winning mares buried infield at this place. One of the great New Orleans travel tips is to visit the race course on the Thanksgiving Day to be the part of the grand celebrations.
