Garden District

New Orleans Garden District is the representative of prosperity experienced by the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas in the 19th century. Developed between 1832 and 1900, the Garden District has become an essential part of New Orleans traveling packages.

The highlight of this place is the collection of impressively constructed mansions that are preserved till date which are the important landmarks of United States. Interestingly, the place is known more for its architectural importance than the gardens, as one might deduce from the name.

Going back to history, the place was known for its plantations before it was sold part by part to the rich Americans. The place derived its name from the small gardens surrounding the blocks developed in the area, with each block accommodating a couple of houses. George Washington Cable House, which is one of the National Historic Landmarks, is the part of this district.

Apart from this, you can find a popular restaurant in the form of Commander's Palace located in this area. An old skating rink building that has been converted into a shopping mall is another highlight of this place.

The Garden District at New Orleans is one of the few areas in the region that received less damage due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The district is well-known for a variety of architectural styles, including Italianate, Queen Anne Victorians and Greek Revival. It is recommended to take a walking tour of the district to explore the architecture closely. Some of the other highlights of the area include Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, Garden District Book Shop and a popular building called Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel.
