
History
New Orleans was founded by French Mississippi Company as Nouvelle-Orleans in the year 1718 but the place had a long history before that. In the beginning, the Native Americans constituted the first human settlements at this place. With the emergence of the place as an important trading port, traders and explorers from France started visiting the place that ultimately led to the foundation of the city. In the year 1722, the city was declared as the capital of French Louisiana.

The colony was surrendered to the Spanish Empire in 1763; however, the governor from Spain was forced to leave the place during the 1768 Rebellion. Spain reconfirmed its control over the place within a year. By the end of the 18th century, the city experienced huge destruction due to hurricanes and fires. The city was reconstructed using the Spanish style of architecture. There was a boost in commerce and sugar industry in the last few years of the 18th century. In 1795 the Spanish Empire granted the Right of Deposit to the Americans making them eligible to use the ports.
In 1800, the state of Louisiana, including New Orleans, was given back to France by Spain. Finally, it was in the year 1803 that Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States. During 19th century, the city suffered from the outbreak of epidemics like yellow fever and malaria along with smallpox. The city experienced the formation of a modern look from 1920s. New Orleans was used for developing Higgins Boats that were used in World War II.
